Zipped DICOM folders
A CBCT must arrive as one .dcm file per slice — a folder of hundreds of them. Compress the whole folder to a single .zip and upload that; gigabyte volumes are fine.
Loose .dcm files — 2D only
A single .dcm is fine for a 2D study like an OPG, and DICOM is preferred there because it keeps the acquisition data. A CBCT is different: one large multi-frame .dcm can't be forwarded for reporting and will have to be exported again.
JPEG / PNG / TIFF for 2D
If your software only offers image export for 2D studies, choose the highest quality setting and original resolution. Never re-save or downscale.
[ THE GOLDEN RULE ]
Always export the full DICOM volume as one file per slice — never screenshots, and never a single multi-frame file. A screenshot can’t be windowed, measured or reconstructed, and a one-file volume can’t be forwarded for reporting.
